Visitors to the tasting room will be able to sample Uncle John’s full range of wines including traditional grape, fruit, dessert and of course the hard ciders. This is the first winery in Michigan to be licensed to operate a tasting room in a farmer’s market setting.

Over the past five years, Uncle John’s Fruit House Winery has collected state and national awards for its carbonated, dessert and specialty wines, as well as cider, perry and spirits. In addition to distribution at its historic-barn-turned-tasting-room on North US-127 in St. Johns and the Lansing City Market, the Fruit House products can be found at more than 70 retail outlets, restaurants and wine shops around the state. Uncle John’s Cider Mill & Fruit House Winery are owned and operated by Dede and Mike Beck, and John Heystek – fifth generation growers at the 240-acre landmark farm.

A proud charter member of the Michigan Farm Market Association, the Lansing City Market was established in 1909 and is now situated along majestic Grand River. For more than 100 years, quality local farmers and artisans have been bringing their goods to sell to the public in a one-of-a-kind, family-friendly environment.

Lansing City Market is located at 325 City Market Dr. (formerly Museum Dr.), just south of where Cedar and Shiawassee streets meet. The market is open year round, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am to 7pm and Saturdays, 9am to 5pm. Parking can be found on both sides of the new market. An east upper plaza and west-of-the-building lower plaza are currently open. Overflow parking is also available in the old market lots.

(NEW BUFFALO, Mich) – Remember the days when families would escape for a week, or two, for a true family vacation at a waterfront or woodland cottage? Days filled with beach-combing, roadside stands, bonfires, bike rides, tire swings, slamming screen doors and an evening of catching lightning bugs in jars?

Memories like these are waiting to be made in Harbor Country®, a quaint collection of eight towns stretched out along the Red Arrow Highway and the Lake Michigan shoreline in Southwest Michigan – just 70 miles from downtown Chicago.

For generations, visitors have been retreating to Harbor Country to beat the summer heat and the hustle and bustle of big city life. In a world of iPods, Facebook and smart phones, escaping is more important now than ever before, providing a chance for families to reconnect and recharge.

Whether you’re looking for a beach house, a family-friendly resort, or a deep woods cabin, Harbor Country has it all. Cottages and rental homes are the perfect option for visitors enjoying family vacations, family reunions or even romantic getaways. You’ll find everything from intimate rooms for two at cozy B&Bs to sprawling vacation houses perfect for the entire extended family.

Gintaras Resort is a casual and relaxing “get-away” with a private, uncrowded fresh water beach ideal for sunning, strolling and swimming during the day; with sunsets, stargazing and bonfires at night. These cottages are situated on a private Lake Michigan beachfront estate, offering a tennis court, volleyball and basketball areas, children’s playground and game room, all conveniently located on its 5+ acres of wooded beachfront.

Stay in one of five fully-furnished bird-themed homes at Sweethaven Resort in Union Pier, each with well-equipped kitchens, big roomy baths, sunny bedrooms and room for the family to spread out for a game of checkers, rummy or cribbage. Cozy up on the screen porch with a classic summer read or follow the moss-covered paths that traverse through nine wooded acres in search of wildlife.

“We welcome families – and their pets – to discover the hidden charm found within our cottage resort,” says Liz & Chuck Garasic. “We’re confident a memorable time will be had by all.”

Historic inns, such as Grand Beach Inn and Warren Woods Inn cater to groups of 30-45 and provide a unique venue for family reunions. In addition, more than a half dozen vacation rental companies – with a collective catalog of more than 200 homes – operate in Harbor Country.

“Vacation rental Agencies are your ideal contact persons in a vacation community,” says John Natsis of Blue Fish vacation Rentals & Sales. “We often have a wide inventory of homes to choose from – from charming small cottages and bungalows, to large, luxury four- and five-bedroom homes.”

Spend your days relaxing on a beach or exploring the hiking trails in Warren Woods and Warren Dunes State Park. Bring your own or rent a bike from Outpost Sports and pedal along the backroads, past orchards and wineries. Try something new, like skim boarding or stand up boarding with Third Coast Surf Shop, which offers rentals, lessons and a full line of gear.

Harbor Country is easily accessible from Exits 1-12 on I-94, or via Amtrak from Chicago, Detroit and other cities along the Wolverine (Pontiac-Detroit-Chicago) and Blue Water (Port Huron-East Lansing-Chicago) lines.

The Harbor Country Convention & Visitors Bureau was established in 1990 as the Harbor Country Lodging Association in accordance with the state of Michigan’s Community Convention or Tourism Marketing Act 59 of 1984.

The mission of the organization is “to promote its members and the assessment district as a major destination for tourism and conventions in southwest Michigan.” The assessment district encompasses the Townships of New Buffalo, Three Oaks, and Chikaming, the city of New Buffalo, the Village of Three Oaks and the Village of Michiana, Michigan.

Awards were presented for the 2008 Gewurztraminer, 2007 Dry Ice Icewine and 2007 Artisan Pinot Noir – the first ever medal for a Michigan red wine. “These awards are not only good for Brys Estate, but also for the recognition of Michigan wines overall,” says Walter Brys. “This shows that Michigan wines can compete on the world stage, and win!”

This year, IWSC received more than 7000 entries from 80 countries – including the United States. Only 86 medals were awarded to red wines from the United States; just 70 medals were awarded to American white wines. Founded in 1969, the IWSC is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. This standard is achieved through a rigorous two-stage judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical (chemical and microbiological) analysis that takes place at The Competition’s headquarters in Surrey, UK. To ensure perfect conditions, the premises include temperature-controlled cellars, a fully equipped independent laboratory for technical analysis, and three dedicated tasting rooms.

Brys Estate Medal Winning Wine Details: · The 2008 Gewurztraminer shows flower aromatics, with bursts of tropical fruit. It is very elegantly floral and one of the best examples produced in Michigan. This wine is a must for any Gewurztraminer lover, pairing well with Thai food or any spicy dish, as well as sweet curry or sushi with wasabi. It is also the perfect white wine for Thanksgiving dinner.

· Crafted with Riesling grapes, the 2007 Dry Ice Icewine boasts an alcohol content of 13.9% and has a lower residual sugar content of 6.7%, setting it apart from other ice wines. This wine shows classic varietal character with hints of grapefruit, apricot, pineapple and passion fruit. With its good acid/sugar balance, the wine drinks smoothly and will age beautifully over time. Described as liquid gold, this wine is a great alternative to other traditional after dinner drinks and pairs well with crème brulee and traditional cheesecake or pound cake with fresh fruit.

· The Brys Estate Artisan series of wines was created to bring wine lovers the highest quality that each varietal has to offer. Using 90% gravity flow and no filtration, these wines – including the 2007 Artisan Pinot Noir – showcase the highest complexities of aroma and mouth feel. This Pinot Noir is complex and full-bodied, with much to offer in the way of plum, cherry and spice, with endless mouth feel and a silky finish. This wine has exceptional aging potential and pairs well with an array of foods, from richer poultry and simple turkey dishes, to entrees featuring pork, beef, smoked salmon and lamb.

Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery is centrally located in the heart of the Old Mission Peninsula – situated on 80 acres with breathtaking views of East Grand Traverse Bay – in Traverse City, Michigan. This boutique winery began with the planting of 32 acres of European vinifera grapes in 2001 and opened the tasting room in May of 2005. Using the highest quality standards, Brys hand picks its grapes and hand crafts its small batch, single vineyard wines, giving attention to detail during the crushing, fermenting, aging and bottling process. You are invited to visit Brys Estate’s 1500-square-foot- old world-style tasting room this summer to help celebrate their fifth anniversary in producing award-winning estate wines.

(LANSING, Mich) – This year, toast your father (or grandfather, brother, uncle or son – maybe, even yourself) with a hand-crafted Michigan beer. With more than 70 craft breweries in the state – and hundreds of brews – there’s definitely something to please every beer drinkers taste.

A four- or six-pack of craft beer makes the ideal gift for dad, as does a trip to a local brewpub for lunch, dinner or a Brewhouse tour. For a totally unique experience, check out Saugatuck Brewing (www.saugatuckbrewing.com) in Saugatuck and Kuhnhenn Brewing (www.kbrewing.com) in Warren, which both offer opportunities for the general public to come in and make their own on-premise brews.

Looking for the perfect gift for inside that Father’s Day Card? Consider a $25 Enthusiast membership with the Michigan Brewers Guild. Available online at www.michiganbrewersguild.org/beernut.asp, this membership also includes VIP “early admission” status at the Guild’s various festivals, discounts at participating membership brewpubs, special VIP brewery tours, and a free Michigan beer t-shirt.

Another gift idea is tickets to the Michigan Summer Beer Festival, July 23-24, at Riverside Park in downtown Ypsilanti’s Depot Town. Advanced tickets are $30 for Friday and $35 for Saturday. This event sells out each year, and often tickets are not available at the gate – so it’s advisable to purchase them in advance. Tickets are available online at www.MichiganBrewersGuild.org or at participating retail outlets and breweries (list posted on www.mbgmash.org).

Michigan beer events taking place Father’s Day weekend include:

Enthusiast Tour at Arcadia Ales, Battle Creek (www.arcadiaales.com)
The tour also includes $1 off first pint. RSVP to Josh Davies: jdavies@arcadiaales.com

Bell’s Beer Tasting at Chamberlin’s Old Forest Inn, Curtis (www.bellsbeer.com)

Michigan’s thriving brewing industry contributes over $24 million in wages with a total economic contribution of more than $133 million. In terms of overall number breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs, Michigan ranks #6 in the nation – thus supporting its claim as “The Great Beer State.”

The Michigan Brewers Guild exists to unify the Michigan brewing community; to increase sales of Michigan-brewed beer through promotions, marketing, public awareness and consumer education; and to monitor and assure a healthy beer industry within the state. For more information, including a list of Michigan microbreweries, log on to www.michiganbrewersguild.org.

ARVC represents 200+ member campgrounds with more than 32,000 sites available throughout the state. Whether pitching a tent, parking an RV or reserving a rustic or modern cabin, Michigan campgrounds offer a great way to disconnect from busy lives and reconnect with families. Campers in Michigan enjoy the great outdoors while fishing or canoeing on the countless lakes, rivers and streams or hiking, biking and riding on the miles of trails that wind throughout the state. There’s definitely no shortage of activities, no matter where the campground is located.

The 2010 Michigan Campground Directory, published by ARVC – Michigan, is now available at various locations statewide, including all Welcome Centers. A PDF version is also available for viewing online at www.michcampgrounds.com. The directory not only lists campgrounds by region, but also includes helpful information on the type of sites available, various amenities such as restroom, laundry and dumping station facilities; recreational offerings such as pools and golf courses; and seasons of operation. Campgrounds that now offer wireless internet access onsite are also identified.

Partnership with Michigan Blood Aims to Boost Summer Collections

(MIO, Mich) – Blood donations in Michigan tend to decline during the summer months, when residents are on the road vacationing with family and friends. To help bolster collections, the Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds – Michigan has once again partnered with Michigan Blood to bring the collection sites to the campgrounds – where the travelers are congregated.

“This is our third year with this exciting community-driven promotion and we’re hopeful to exceed our donations once again,” says Tom Briggs, ARVC-Michigan Marketing Committee Chairperson and owner of Grand Rogue Campground in Grand Rapids. “Since 2008, we have had 687 registered donors (242 first timers) with 499 units of blood collected, meaning that our member campground efforts have had the potential to save 1,497 lives. That’s impressive.”

In 2010, 12 member parks collectively will host nearly two dozen blood drives – with holiday weekends – Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day – expected to be big collection weekends.

Michigan Blood will set up in the campground clubhouse or they will bring in their Blood Bus – a self-contained donation station. The drives will be open to campground guests as well as the general public. The initial goal is to have at least 20 individuals donate during each event, to make it a worthwhile collection day for the Blood Center.

“Blood needs don’t go away in the summer,” says Kona Kenny, Mobile Recruiter for Michigan Blood in Grand Rapids. “Many donors are away from home, so keeping the blood supply pumped up is a big seasonal challenge. We’re really looking forward to working with the ARVC members to help us keep up with state-wide needs as well as increase awareness about our program.”

Hospitals in five major regions of the state count on Michigan Blood for 100 percent of their regular blood supply. After these hospitals, and their patients, have the blood they need, Michigan Blood regularly shares this precious resource elsewhere across the country, including the U.S. Military, upon request. This way, every drop of donated blood is put to the best possible use. For more information on Michigan Blood, or blood donation, visit www.miblood.org.

A copy of the ARVC-Michigan 2010 Summer Blood Drive schedule is below. New dates and locations will be added throughout the summer and will be posted on ARVC’s website at www.michcampgrounds.com.

ARVC represents nearly 200 member campgrounds with more than 30,000 sites available throughout the state. ARVC Michigan’s mission is to lead in the development of the RV Parks and Campground industry through education, communication and representation. ARVC Michigan is a member of the National Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds (www.gocampingamerica.com).

The new M. Lawrence sparkler from L. Mawby is a blend of equal parts riesling, traminette, and cayuga tank fermented in a cuve close system, and finished with a demi sec dosage of 4% sugar. With great aromas of ripe fruit, balancing acidty, full flavors and a sweet finish this fruity, flavorful sweety can be enjoyed on it’s own, or with a variety of foods. Most importantly, says Larry Mawby, “Detroit is to be enjoyed while celebrating the economic revival of Detroit. Now that an appropriate sparkling wine exists for celebrating the good times in Detroit, we’re confident that good times in Detroit will appear in ever greater numbers. A crowd scene, if you will, of goodness and love and prosperity that will be/is Detroit, Michigan [or any Detroit, anywhere] in the 21st century.”

About L Mawby: L Mawby has produced estate grown and bottled Leelanau Peninsula wines since our first crush in the fall of 1978, and now make entirely methode champenoise and cuve close method sparkling wines. Many wines are from their estate vineyards; however, they are producing wines from grapes purchased from other vineyards and small growers. Current annual production is around 10,000 cases, allowing small lots made with minimal handling. All L. Mawby sparkling wines are made using the methode champenoise, and are aged in the bottle before disgorging, with many cuvees being given 3 or more years of tirage aging. M. Lawrence sparkling wines are produced in the cuve close method, are given less aging, and are less costly than the method champenoise sparkling wines. L Mawby is located in Suttons Bay, Michigan on the Leelanau Peninsula, just a few short minutes from Traverse City and is the area’s only winery offering sparkling wines exclusively. The tasting room is open daily May through October, from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Winter hours from November through April are Thursday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Visit www.lmawby.com for more information.
